The Ghana Police Service has arrested convicted fraudster Eric Afoakwa, also known as “Chad”, who had been on the run after being sentenced in absentia to eight years’ imprisonment by the Accra High Court for multiple financial crimes.
According to a police statement, Afoakwa was convicted in 2019 on five out of six charges, including money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents, and tax evasion. The judgment was delivered by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, who ordered that the eight-year prison sentences be served concurrently.
The court also directed Afoakwa to refund US$132,660 to the complainant in the case.
Following the conviction, Afoakwa absconded and was declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which appealed to the public for information leading to his arrest.
The Police said that on Sunday, July 6, 2026, officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), arrested Afoakwa while he was preparing to leave the country.
He is expected to be handed over to EOCO to facilitate the enforcement of the High Court’s judgment.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant state institutions to track down fugitives and ensure they face the full force of the law.
