The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has announced with profound sadness the passing of Professor Emeritus Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, the institution’s Foundation Vice-Chancellor and the first Mining Professor in West Africa.
Prof. Mireku-Gyimah is celebrated as a trailblazer in mining education, a visionary leader, and a driving force behind the establishment and growth of UMaT.
His pioneering work in mining engineering and his commitment to academic excellence positioned the University as a centre of excellence in training professionals for Ghana and beyond.
Described as a mentor, innovator, and nation-builder, his contributions extended beyond academia, influencing policy, research, and the development of Ghana’s extractive sector.
“The University has lost a pillar whose legacy is etched in every facet of our institution. His leadership and dedication to mining education will continue to inspire generations,” a statement from UMaT said.
The University extended its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire UMaT community, while pledging to honour his memory by upholding the values he championed.
