The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on all Ghanaians to take responsibility in the fight against illegal mining also known as galamsey, warning that silence and complicity are as destructive as the act itself.
In their strongly worded statement, the bishops said the battle against galamsey is not solely about law enforcement but about “the very soul of Ghana.”
They challenged chiefs, politicians, religious leaders, and security officers to resist corruption and protect the nation’s forests and rivers.
“To all Ghanaians, we say: resist the lure of quick wealth that leaves our children a desert in place of a homeland,” the statement read. “The power of the people is greater than the people in power. Communities must stand firm, protect their rivers and forests, and say no to galamsey.”
The bishops emphasised that defeating galamsey will require a collective awakening where every citizen acts as a custodian of the land for future generations.
