Roald Goethe
On December 1, 2025, Tullow Oil plc unveiled a dramatic leadership shift, naming Roald Goethe, a veteran oil trader with deep roots in West African energy markets, as its independent non-executive Chair.
Goethe, who joined the board in February 2023 and holds over 28 million shares plus senior notes, steps up from roles on the Audit and Remuneration committees.
His career highlights include building Trafigura’s oil trading in West Africa from 1994, founding Delaney Petroleum in 2006 for crude deals across Africa and the Middle East, and advising Trafigura until 2021.
Replacing Phuthuma Nhleko—who stepped down immediately to pursue other ventures—Tullow also saw Genevieve Sangudi, Martin Greenslade, and Mitchell Ingram exit as non-executive directors.
This shrinks the board to a streamlined quartet: Goethe as Chair, Rebecca Wiles as independent director, CEO Ian Perks, and CFO Richard Miller.
The move slashes costs and signals a focused push toward refinancing Tullow’s capital and boosting stakeholder value in its Ghana-centric operations.
In his first statement as Chair, Goethe expressed honor in the role, pledging support for Perks and Miller while thanking departing members for their contributions.
He emphasized Tullow’s edge as a top African operator, committed to net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and shared prosperity in host nations.
With this “renewed leadership structure and reduced cost base,” the company eyes challenges like capital restructuring to unlock future growth.
