VACANCY: Geochemical Technician at Newmont Kenyasi

About This Role:

• To support geoscience field data acquisition including but not limited to geochemical, geophysical, and drilling programs by operating specialized instruments and collecting field data which would be used in generating mineral exploration targets.

In This Role You Will:

Safety 

• Complete all data acquisition processes by fully adhering to all Newmont’s Health and Safety systems and protocols.
• Oversee that all work carried out adheres to Health and Safety standard operating procedures.
• Conduct daily toolbox meetings in the Field.
• Identify and resolve safety issues within area of responsibility.
• Timely report all safety issues and incidence to the Senior Geochemist, Exploration Safety Team and SCC.

Geochemical and Other Geoscience Data Acquisition

•  Field collection of TMG (Terrain Mapping Geochemistry) and DSG (Deep Sensing Geochemistry) soil samples.
• Drying and packaging of TMG and DSG samples for onward submission to the lab.
• Field collection of conventional soil samples.
• Undertaking of BLEG and stream sediment sampling under the supervision of the Senior Geochemist.
• Collection multi-element and hyperspectral data respectively using a portable XRF (pXRF) and Terraspec HALO devices.
• Assisting with other geological data capturing including but not limited to drilling, field mapping and core shed activities.

Operating Instruments and Light Vehicle 

• Operation of instruments as instructed by the Geochemist and according to standards.
• Support with troubleshooting of equipment.
• Ability to operate a manual 4 X 4 Light Vehicle in all terrains.

Staff Supervision 

• Support with providing any required training to Field Assistant (casuals).
• Supervise the day-to-day activities of casuals in the field.

Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist:

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

• Junior High School (J.H.S) / Senior High School (S.H.S) Certificate or any related Certificate.

Experience: 

• 2-3 years of industry experience in a mining or exploration.

Technical Skills:

• Knowledge of geochemical techniques including the use of specialized geochemical instruments and how to collect quality data.
• Experience in using a hand-held Global Position System (GPS).
• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with the field crew.
• Demonstrated experience in applying the principles of problem-solving techniques to identify and resolve a problem in the best interest of all stakeholders.
• Ability to accurately give an account of information about the performance of outputs.
• Proficiency in collecting other geoscience data including but not limited to drillhole data (core marking, cutting, sampling, core photography), and geophysical data.

• The position is located at the Ahafo South mine. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job.

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit for extended periods, climb stairs, walk and stand. The job requires working at heights.
  • Work Environment: The employee is required to operate in a safety-critical environment with potentially harmful / dangerous machinery and equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to noise more than 85 decibels, and to fumes, high temperature, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces etc.
  • Protective Equipment (PPE): Work requires mandatory PPE such as helmet, goggles, high visible clothing, safety harness, ear plugs and dust mask according to working conditions.
