The Omanhene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, has ordered all companies or individuals engaged in illegal mining(galamsey) in the area to immediately vacate.
It comes in the wake of what the Omanhene describes as growing concern over the environmental destruction caused by unauthorized mining operations.
According to the Omanhene, no company or individual has received authorization to exploit land within the Wenchi Traditional Area.
A statement issued and signed by the Omanhene on Sunday (5 January) said “All operations must cease, and you are required to remove any machinery and equipment from the site by 6 PM today.”
The directive also mandated companies to undertake immediate restorative measures, including filling excavated pits and restoring degraded lands to their original state adding that failure to do so will lead to serious repercussions.
“Non-compliance with these instructions will lead to serious repercussions,” the statement cautioned.
This decisive action aligns with national efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s environment.
