The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso will begin on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The Commission said the decision follows information received from SONABEL, the operator of the dam.
According to a WRC press release dated August 27, 2026, the reservoir level stood at 234.64 metres as of Thursday, with the dam 95.19% full. The level was 0.36 metres below the normal reservoir level of 235 metres.
The WRC has advised communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to take the necessary precautions ahead of the controlled release.
Residents have also been urged to comply with safety guidelines, directives and advisories issued by local assemblies and relevant agencies.
The controlled spillage is expected to increase water flows along the White Volta system, making precautionary measures important for communities and activities located close to the river and adjoining areas.
