The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a series of investments and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply across Ghana, particularly in Accra and Kumasi.
In a statement addressing recent power outages, the Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by households, businesses, and institutions, attributing the disruptions to longstanding underinvestment in the electricity distribution network, poor planning, and inadequate maintenance of critical infrastructure.
He said government has begun a comprehensive programme to upgrade the distribution system, including the replacement of ageing transformers, expansion of substation capacity, and rehabilitation of overloaded feeders in high-demand areas.
As part of the intervention, about 2,500 transformers are being procured under an emergency programme to boost capacity and stabilise supply.
In Accra, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is upgrading key substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi to reduce outages and improve voltage stability. Similar network reinforcement projects are underway in Kumasi to support growing industrial and commercial demand.
The Minister noted that the broader distribution enhancement programme will focus on reducing technical losses, improving power quality, strengthening fault detection and response times, and supporting the integration of new power generation into the grid.
He added that steps are also being taken to improve operational efficiency and accountability within ECG, as well as enhance communication with customers regarding outages and maintenance schedules.
Dr Jinapor emphasised that the measures form part of a long-term strategy to build a resilient and modern electricity distribution system to support Ghana’s economic transformation and 24-hour economy agenda.
He appealed to the public for patience as the upgrades are carried out, assuring that government remains committed to delivering reliable, affordable, and quality electricity nationwide.
