Lead Convener of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says the group is deliberating on a new “Stop Galamsey” protest, with details expected to be announced later.
In a social media post, Mr Barker-Vormawor said the planned demonstration is being considered but did not provide a date, location or specific demands.
The proposed protest would follow Democracy Hub’s September 2024 anti-galamsey demonstrations in Accra, which called for stronger action against illegal mining and the protection of Ghana’s forests and water bodies.
The 2024 demonstrations resulted in the arrest of scores of protesters, with the development triggering a wider public debate over the government’s response to illegal mining and the right to peaceful protest.
The latest announcement comes amid continued concerns over the impact of illegal mining on water bodies, forest reserves and communities across Ghana
