The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Digital Centres Limited, Dzifa Gunu, has strongly condemned the alleged involvement of a Member of Parliament in a mob attack on a government anti-illegal mining task force in the Ahafo Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Bronikrom near Hwidiem, when officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), supported by military personnel, came under attack from a mob during an anti-galamsey operation.
According to police accounts, the team, led by the Director of Operations at NAIMOS, had arrested two suspected illegal miners and seized several vehicles and weapons believed to be used for mining activities. The arrests reportedly angered some residents, leading to a violent confrontation.
Police and traditional leaders later intervened to rescue the officers, who were evacuated to Kenyase. Calm has since been restored to the area.
MPs Accused of Interfering in Operation
In a Facebook post reacting to the incident, Mr. Gunu alleged that the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, led a group of individuals to the scene and demanded the immediate release of the arrested suspects.
Earlier report suggests the MP told the task force he had been sent by Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, and insisted that the suspects — including a Burkinabe national — be released and their handcuffs removed “so that locals would not see them in handcuffs.”
Mr. Gunu described the incident as “shameful” and said it undermined law enforcement efforts to combat illegal mining.
“The sad murder of Major Mahama is still very fresh on our minds,” he wrote.
“To think that an MP in the government of President John Dramani Mahama will lead an angry mob to attack a law enforcement team is most despicable. This should not be tolerated by any sane person.”
The Ahafo Regional Police Command has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the attack but has not commented on the alleged involvement of the MPs.
The incident has reignited public concern over political interference in the fight against illegal mining, with security analysts urging authorities to ensure that such cases are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
