Joana Gyan Cudjoe
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central from contesting in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The EC’s decision is based on an order issued by the High Court in Sekondi, which has imposed an injunction on her candidacy pending the final determination of an ongoing legal dispute.
The court’s interlocutory injunction, dated 31 May 2024, stems from a suit brought against Joana Gyan Cudjoe by Gyedu Frimpong and four others.
The lawsuit names Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Commission as defendants. In its ruling, the High Court restrained her from holding herself out as the duly elected NDC parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central.
The ruling also directs the Electoral Commission and the NDC to refrain from recognizing her as the official candidate.
In a letter addressed to Gyan Cudjoe, signed by Samuel Tettey, the EC’s deputy chairman of operations, the Commission stated, “The said order has neither been stayed nor vacated, hence the Commission is bound by same.”
The letter further informs Gyan Cudjoe of her disqualification from contesting in the upcoming parliamentary elections, in compliance with the High Court’s order.
This decision comes amid an ongoing legal battle that is yet to reach a final resolution. The EC has expressed its commitment to adhering strictly to the court’s ruling, ensuring that no candidate with pending legal issues is allowed to participate in the election process.
