The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has launched new guidelines for the inspection, monitoring and reporting of fugitive methane emissions from oil and gas operations as part of efforts to strengthen environmental protection and support Ghana’s climate action agenda.
The guidelines were officially launched in Accra and brought together policymakers, petroleum industry operators, civil society organisations and development partners.
According to the EPA, the Guidelines for Inspection, Monitoring, and Reporting of Fugitive Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Operations in Ghana establish the mechanisms and actions that operators must adopt to prevent, monitor and control methane emissions from petroleum activities.
The framework is expected to provide a clear and consistent approach for managing fugitive methane emissions across Ghana’s upstream and midstream petroleum sectors while strengthening regulatory oversight and promoting compliance with environmental standards.
The EPA said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve environmental performance in the petroleum industry and support Ghana’s commitments to climate change mitigation.
The Authority noted that effective implementation of the guidelines will require collaboration among government institutions, industry operators, civil society organisations and development partners to ensure the sustainable development of the country’s petroleum resources while safeguarding the environment.
