The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has commended the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Navy and the Office of the President for what it described as a swift and professional response that led to the safe rescue of 71 Ghanaian fishermen who were recently attacked and held at sea by pirates.
In a statement issued on Friday (27 February), the Ministry praised the coordinated security operation, noting that the timely intervention ensured the safe return of all the affected fishermen without further harm.
The Ministry described the response as a demonstration of government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian fishermen and safeguarding the country’s territorial waters. It said the collaboration among the security agencies and the Presidency underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination in addressing maritime security threats.
While expressing concern about recent pirate attacks targeting Ghanaian fishermen, the Ministry reaffirmed that government remains resolute in strengthening surveillance and rapid response mechanisms at sea.
It further indicated that measures under the recently enacted Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146), would enhance enforcement, monitoring and safety within the fisheries sector to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Ministry assured fishing communities that efforts are ongoing to reinforce naval patrols and improve safety systems to ensure Ghana’s maritime space remains secure.
