Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMC) says it expects monthly production to reach 700,000 tonnes in August, citing improving weather conditions and the gradual commissioning of new heavy-duty equipment.
In a press release, the company described the projected output as a major operational milestone and a significant step toward achieving its annual production target of eight million tonnes.
GMC attributed the expected increase in production to the decline in seasonal rainfall, which has improved mining conditions, as well as the introduction of new equipment to enhance operational efficiency.
The company, Ghana’s sole manganese miner and exporter, operates the Nsuta open-pit mine in the Western Region, where mining and haulage activities are typically affected by heavy rains during the wet season.
According to GMC, shipments between May and July slowed temporarily due to rainfall-related disruptions that affected haulage and processing operations. However, with rainfall easing as August begins, pit conditions have improved considerably, paving the way for increased production.
GMC said the projected increase in output forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen operational performance while maintaining its position as a low-cost producer through operational innovation.
The company also noted that beyond supplying manganese ore to the global steel industry, its high-grade carbonate manganese ore is increasingly being recognised as a strategic raw material for the new-energy battery supply chain.
It said higher production would help ensure stable supplies to international markets while supporting the Government of Ghana’s value-addition agenda, including the planned manganese refinery project, which is expected to generate greater economic benefits locally.
Looking ahead, GMC expressed confidence that production of nearly 700,000 tonnes in August would contribute to improved operational performance during the second half of the year.
The company said it would continue to monitor weather conditions and utilise its newly deployed high-efficiency equipment to achieve its full-year production target.
