Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected ongoing emergency restoration works at the Akosombo Switchyard following the fire outbreak that disrupted power supply across parts of the country earlier this year.
The fire incident, which occurred on April 23, 2026, destroyed the Switchyard Control Room and affected electricity transmission operations.
In a post shared after the visit, Mr. Jinapor said he received a detailed briefing from the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), led by Engineer Frank Otchere, on measures being implemented to restore operations and strengthen the facility against future incidents.

According to the Minister, the emergency restoration works include the construction of a Temporary Control Room equipped with modern control systems as well as the installation of enhanced fire protection systems for both interim and permanent infrastructure.
He disclosed that the Temporary Control Room is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026.
Mr. Jinapor further revealed that government is engaging stakeholders in the power sector on plans to construct an ultra-modern permanent Control Room aimed at improving the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
The Minister commended GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and technical teams involved in the restoration efforts for their dedication and commitment to restoring stable operations at the facility.
The Akosombo Switchyard plays a critical role in Ghana’s power transmission system, serving as a major hub for electricity distribution nationwide.
