Public transport fares in the country will increase by 8% from Saturday, (September 26) following consultations between the Ministry of Transport and commercial road transport operators.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) announced the adjustment in a joint communiqué following consultations held between September 8 and 22, 2026.
The increase will apply to shared taxis, intra-city tro-tro services, intercity long-distance transport and haulage services.
The operators said the adjustment takes into account changes in ex-pump petroleum prices, spare parts, vehicle maintenance and other operational costs, alongside the financial pressures facing drivers and commuters.
The 8% increase will be calculated on the approved transport fares that took effect on May 24, 2025.
The operators said the Government’s intervention on diesel prices helped to moderate the extent of the fare adjustment.
Commercial transport operators have been directed to comply with the approved fares and display the revised fare schedule at loading terminals and stations.
The unions also warned operators against charging fares above the approved rates, saying such conduct will attract sanctions.
