The Director of Communication at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, says the National Inter-Ministerial Operation against Illegal Mining (NAIMOS) remains resolute and undeterred following the recent attack on its team at Hwediem in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on Friday, November 7, Ms. Mawuenyefia dismissed claims that the attack had demoralised the task force, stating that NAIMOS continues to operate with full government backing.
“NAIMOS is not demoralised. This is not a task force that retreats because of one incident. Their focus remains firm,” she said. “Yes, we are revising our strategy in light of what happened at Hwediem to strengthen coordination and logistics.”
She explained that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Water Resources Commission, is refining a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to tackle illegal mining, especially in water bodies.
Ms. Mawuenyefia emphasized that the government remains unwavering in its support for NAIMOS and its partners, describing the protection of Ghana’s water bodies as a national priority.
“The government is strongly behind NAIMOS. The work continues. We are not where we want to be, but we are making progress in restoring sanity to our water bodies,” she affirmed.
She added that logistics and personnel will be reinforced, noting that additional resources are being mobilised to boost field operations and ensure the safety of officers in high-risk zones.
