President John Mahama
President John Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa following a recent wave of xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.
The affected Ghanaians had earlier responded to an advisory issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and subsequently registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for evacuation assistance.
According to the government, the evacuation exercise is aimed at ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Ghanaian nationals who have been affected by the attacks and growing tensions in some South African communities.
The move follows reports of renewed xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals, raising concerns among African governments and diplomatic missions operating in South Africa.
Government officials say arrangements are being made to facilitate the safe return of the registered individuals to Ghana in the coming days.
