The Government of Ghana has commenced an immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran following heightened tensions in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
In a statement shared on Facebook by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Monday 16 June, the government cited the protection of Ghanaian lives as the driving force behind the decision. The evacuation is being carried out through Iran’s land borders and includes Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals residing in the country.
As part of the emergency measures, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff.
“We have taken this difficult but necessary decision in the interest of Ghanaian lives,” the minister stated. “To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.”
The Mahama administration is also closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in Israel. While no evacuation has been announced yet, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed that Ghana’s embassy operations in Tel Aviv be scaled down to essential functions only.
“All Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” the minister advised.
The government reassured the public that every effort is being made to protect Ghanaian lives abroad. “No effort would be spared in keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” Mr. Ablakwa emphasized.
In a strong diplomatic appeal, Ghana urged both Israel and Iran to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue. “The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” the minister concluded.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to provide further updates as the situation unfolds.
