The Minority in Parliament is demanding a multi-ministerial probe into an alleged incident of the brutality of some illegal miners by some military officers over claims the victims had allegedly invaded the concession of Anglo-Gold Ashanti.
The incident which is said to have occurred over the weekend is a result of heightening discontent of some residents who have bemoaned the large concession areas enjoyed by large-scale miners.
Speaking on behalf of the minority, ranking member on the mines and energy committee John Jinapor also accused the government of shielding foreigners engaged in illegal mining in the country for their personal interests
Background
Some illegal miners were over the weekend allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment by the Joint Security Taskforce on illegal mining.
The incident occured when the victims were arrested by the taskforce for invading the concession of Anglo-gold Ashanti, a mining company in Obuasi.
After intelligence gathering, the Joint Military -Police Taskforce proceeded to the site, ceiling all entrances to the ghettos, leaving only one opened.
They surrounded the area in their numbers, armed fully.
