Newmont Corporation has achieved the first gold pour at its Ahafo North Project in Ghana, marking a major step toward commercial production later this year.
The milestone, reached on September 19, 2025, underscores years of planning, engineering, and construction at what is regarded as one of West Africa’s most promising gold deposits.
“This first pour validates the strength of our world-class portfolio and disciplined execution,” said Tom Palmer, President and CEO of Newmont. “As we ramp up to commercial production in the fourth quarter, our focus remains on creating enduring value for shareholders, host communities, and the government of Ghana.”
Located at Afrisipakrom, about 30 kilometers from the company’s Ahafo South operations, Ahafo North is projected to produce between 275,000 and 325,000 ounces of gold annually over a 13-year mine life.
It has already created 4,500 contracted jobs, with about 560 permanent roles and 1,000 contracted positions expected once the mine is fully operational.
Beyond jobs, Newmont expects Ahafo North to contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy through royalties, taxes, fees, and local development programs. The project follows Newmont’s divestment of its Akyem mine earlier this year and will serve as the company’s second operating site in Ghana.
Originally acquired in 2002 as part of Newmont’s broader Ahafo lease, Ahafo North has long been considered the best unmined gold deposit in the region.
With the successful pour, Newmont says the project not only affirms its technical design but also strengthens the company’s long-term growth strategy.
Newmont is the world’s largest gold producer, with a diversified portfolio spanning Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Papua New Guinea.
The company is also recognized for its sustainability and governance practices, which it says remain central to its operations in Ghana and beyond.
