The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has officially launched the Atewa Forest Centenary Celebration at a ceremony held at Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, marking the countdown to the forest’s 100th anniversary in March 2026.
The event brought together chiefs and people of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, the Eastern Regional Minister, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and other dignitaries.
In his address, the Okyenhene reflected on the legacy of his great-grandfather, Nana Ofori Atta I, whose vision and commitment led to the gazettement of the Atewa Forest for protection in January 1926.
He called on Ghanaians to recommit themselves to preserving this legacy and to empower communities and traditional leaders to serve as vigilant guardians of the country’s natural heritage.
Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin reaffirmed his long-standing call for the Atewa Forest to be declared a National Park, describing the move as critical to safeguarding the forest’s water sources, climate regulation role, rich biodiversity, and other ecological services for present and future generations.
The theme for the centenary celebration is “Our Legacy, Our Future,” reflecting the enduring importance of the Atewa Forest to Ghana’s environmental sustainability and national development.
The launch was held in partnership with the Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape (CCAL), A Rocha Ghana, and the Forestry Commission of Ghana.
