Dr. Maalug Yennusom
As Pantang Hospital marks its 50th anniversary this year, its acting Director-Genera, Dr Maalug Yennusoml has appealed to Corporate Ghana and the public for support to revamp the country’s leading psychiatric hospital.
Speaking on GTV Breakfast during Purple Month, the acting director announced that Pantang Hospital, commissioned in 1975, will be celebrating five decades of service in 2025. He called attention to the hospital’s deteriorating infrastructure and urgent need for renovation.
“Our internal roads are in poor condition, and many of our wards require a general facelift,” he said. “Pantang is more than a mental health hospital — we offer dental care, maternity services, and general medical treatment. We need support to continue serving Ghanaians effectively.”
The appeal came as part of the broader Purple Month campaign, observed every May and spearheaded by the Mental Health Authority to promote awareness and investment in mental health. Activities during the month include community engagement, education, and advocacy on key mental health issues.
This week, Pantang Hospital is focusing on maternal mental health education with activities planned at La General Hospital, RCH, and other partner institutions.
The acting director praised the efforts of the Mental Health Authority and its Chief Executive, Professor Pinaman Appau, for her dedication to improving mental health services nationwide.
He urged organizations and individuals to join Pantang’s anniversary celebration and support its mission to provide quality mental health and general healthcare to the public.
