Nana Akwasi Awuah
Former Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), now the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Nana Akwasi Awuah, says he requested a multi-year audit of the company’s accounts for 2020 to 2024 in September 2024, disputing reports that the audit process was initiated by the company’s new management in 2025.
In a statement dated October 13, Mr Awuah said he wrote to the Auditor General on September 2, 2024, requesting an audit of PMMC’s books and accounts for the five-year period.
His response follows a report from an engagement between GoldBod and Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, which indicated that PMMC’s accounts had not been audited for 2020 to 2024 and that the new management requested a financial audit in 2025.
Mr Awuah attributed the delay to bureaucratic processes associated with the appointment of a new external auditor by the Ghana Audit Service, arguing that it was not the fault of PMMC management.
He said the Parliamentary Select Committee on State Enterprises also wrote to the Auditor General in support of his request for the multi-year audit.
According to the former managing director, the Auditor General subsequently assembled a team that began work in September 2024. He said the final audit reports covering the period were completed, signed and submitted in April and June 2025.
Mr Awuah also said PMMC underwent a performance audit by the Auditor General in 2023, which he described as the first of its kind at the company in about two decades.
He said the final audit reports showed that PMMC had faced difficulties over the years but had been turned around by the end of 2024, laying a foundation for the establishment of GoldBod, which succeeded PMMC.
