Sierra Leone’s Director of Mines at the National Minerals Agency (NMA), Peter Kapr Bangura, has been elected Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF).
The election took place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, during the IGF Annual General Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, marking a major milestone for Sierra Leone’s mining governance and global standing.
Mr. Bangura secured an emphatic 78% of the votes in a highly competitive field that included candidates from Africa’s top mining nations such as South Africa, Ghana, Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, and Mozambique.
According to the National Minerals Agency, this achievement represents a strong vote of confidence in Sierra Leone’s mining reforms and sectoral governance under the leadership of the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Hon. Julius Daniel Mattai.
The Agency noted that Mr. Bangura’s election aligns with President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s broader national vision for sustainable development and responsible natural resource management.
The Intergovernmental Forum (IGF) is a global platform that brings together more than 75 member states to promote sustainable mining and ensure that mineral wealth contributes to national development and poverty reduction.
Mr. Bangura’s new role as Vice Chair is expected to enhance Sierra Leone’s voice in international mining policy and further strengthen collaboration with other resource-rich nations.
