The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a robbery gang linked to attacks on mining sites in the Upper East Region, following an intelligence-led operation carried out on April 29, 2026.
Four suspects — Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul — were arrested at a hideout in Zuarungu. The operation forms part of efforts to curb rising criminal activity targeting miners and mining communities in the region.
Police investigations indicate that the group was behind a robbery at the Kejetia mining site in Gbane on March 28, 2026, where a miner, Atani Mark, was attacked and robbed of cash and gold. The suspects are also believed to be connected to a series of violent robberies along key transport routes, particularly those serving mining areas.
A search conducted at the hideout led to the retrieval of a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. The weapon had been concealed in a motorbike believed to have been stolen during one of the group’s operations. Seven additional motorbikes suspected to be stolen were also recovered.
During interrogation, the suspects admitted to multiple attacks, including incidents along the Zuarungu–Kongo road that left victims seriously injured and disrupted movement within mining and trading corridors.
Two other suspects, identified as Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, sustained gunshot injuries during the police operation and later died. Their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The four suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations, while a man identified only as “DJ” is currently on the run. Police say efforts are underway to apprehend him and any other accomplices.
