Prof Naa Dedei Tagoe
The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has announced the promotion of Prof Naa Dedei Tagoe from Senior Lecturer to the rank of Associate Professor of Geomatics, in recognition of her outstanding academic contributions, leadership, and service to both the university and Ghana’s environmental sector.
Prof Tagoe, a Geomatic Engineer specializing in photogrammetry, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing, brings together over a decade of teaching and research at UMaT with extensive technical and hands-on experience.
She currently serves as Head of the Department of Geomatic and Civil Engineering and has played a pivotal role in advancing geospatial education and applied research in Ghana.
In June this year, Prof Tagoe was elected Chair-elect of Commission 8 of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), a position that reflects her growing international influence in urban and spatial planning, land management, and sustainable infrastructure development.
Her work reflects a strong commitment to food security, environmental sustainability, sustainable mining, community empowerment, and geospatial innovation for development.
In the area of mining, she has trained small-scale miners in resource optimization and tailings disposal practices to improve safety and reduce environmental impact.
As a volunteer, she supports financially challenged women in mining communities to acquire employable skills and actively participates in STEM and gender awareness programs for girls.
Prof Tagoe is also a Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellow. She holds a Master of Science in Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, Germany; a PhD from the University of Cape Town, where her research focused on extracting spatial information from panoramic images of cultural heritage structures; and an Advanced Certificate in Public Governance and Administration from the School of Public Governance, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
