The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced that the ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, commonly known as “Styrofoam” or “takeaway packs,” will take effect from January 1, 2027.
In a public notice, the EPA said the directive applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, food vendors, hospitality operators, institutions, and all other relevant stakeholders across the country.
The Authority said the move forms part of efforts to address environmental pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices in Ghana.
The EPA urged all affected businesses and stakeholders to begin preparations towards compliance ahead of the implementation date.
Polystyrene foam products are widely used for food packaging and takeaway services but have long faced criticism over their environmental impact due to their non-biodegradable nature and contribution to plastic waste pollution.
