The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has strengthened its collaboration with academia by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).
The agreement aims to enhance capacity building in geoscience, ensuring that students and professionals acquire the expertise needed to drive national development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the Director-General of GGSA, Isaac Kuuwan Mwinbelle, described the pact as a historic milestone in the Authority’s efforts to collaborate with educational institutions.

Providing details on the MoU, Mwinbelle explained that the partnership will facilitate the proper training of geoscientists while equipping UENR students with the right knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the country’s development.
He emphasized that the agreement focuses on building students’ capacities, enabling them to graduate with a deep understanding of the field.
Additionally, he noted that with the expansion of mineral exploration playing a key role in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), it has become imperative for GGSA to partner with relevant institutions to train more professionals.

The Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, highlighted the alignment of both institutions’ objectives, stressing the significance of the partnership for Ghana’s geological and extractive industries.
“This MoU cements the common vision we have long recognized but never formally realized. It marks the transition from possibility to reality,” he stated.

He further emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, “We must acknowledge our shared mandate to undertake joint projects in mineral resource exploration, where field experts and academicians can work together to advance the sector.”
The partnership will facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas for mineral resource exploration. Additionally, it will support staff exchange programs and training initiatives between the two institutions, fostering a stronger link between academia and industry.
