Environmental advocate and Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has highlighted the importance of protecting open spaces in Accra as the city continues to experience rapid development.
She was speaking at the launch of signage for the KB Asante Memorial Park at Nmai Dzorn in the Adentan Municipal Assembly.
According to Awula Serwah, the park is important not only because of the trees it contains but also because it provides a preserved open space within an increasingly built-up urban environment.

“Accra is becoming a concrete jungle,” she said, noting that development has resulted in homes and other structures occupying much of the available land in many areas.
She said preserving spaces such as the KB Asante Memorial Park allows for air circulation and provides residents with access to a green and serene environment.

The signage initiative was undertaken by the Mmofra Foundation with funding from HealthBridge.
Awula Serwah explained that the new signage would provide information about trees in the park, including their names and other relevant information.

Visitors will also be able to scan QR codes on the signs to access additional information about the trees.
She said the initiative would help enhance the educational value of the park while encouraging people to better appreciate the trees and the green space.
The KB Asante Memorial Park is located at Nmai Dzorn in the Adentan Municipal Assembly and contains a number of trees and an open space preserved for public use.
