The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a suspected galamsey kingpin for illegal mining activities that blocked and polluted the Ayensu River at Bisiasi in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.
During the raid, the suspect reportedly appeared at the site armed with a pistol and attempted to bribe the NAIMOS taskforce with GHC100,000 to stop the operation.
The team rejected the offer and proceeded to arrest him.
The bribery cash and all galamsey equipment found at the site have been seized, and the illegal mining site has been closed down.
NAIMOS says the operation forms part of its nationwide enforcement drive to protect Ghana’s water bodies and farmlands from destruction caused by illegal mining.
