A police inspector stationed at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region has been arrested together with three other suspects over alleged armed robberies targeting mobile money (MoMo) vendors in Kumasi and surrounding communities.
The officer, identified as Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah, is accused of participating in a robbery operation in which a MoMo vendor was allegedly attacked at gunpoint and robbed of GH¢38,600.
According to reports, the suspects fled the scene after the robbery, but Inspector Danquah allegedly left his mobile phone behind during the operation.
In a twist of events, the officer later reportedly went to a police station to lodge a complaint that his phone had been stolen. However, upon arrival, he allegedly encountered the MoMo vendor who had also visited the station to report the robbery incident.
The development reportedly raised suspicion and led to further investigations, resulting in the arrest of Inspector Danquah and three other suspects believed to be connected to the robberies.
Police sources say investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the group’s activities and whether they may be linked to other attacks on MoMo vendors in the Ashanti Region.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over increasing armed attacks on mobile money operators across the country.
