At least twelve officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have sustained injuries while attempting to contain a fuel tanker explosion at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region.
The explosion reportedly occurred moments after the tanker overturned and caught fire, with the flames spreading to a nearby eatery, Ebo Chop Bar.
Reports indicate that the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2026, leaving commuters and drivers stranded in the busy station and trading centre.
In a statement, the GNFS said that during cooling operations aimed at preventing reignition and a possible secondary explosion, the tanker reignited and subsequently exploded, resulting in injuries to twelve officers.
Of the injured personnel, four sustained severe injuries. Three were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, while one was treated at the Potsin Polyclinic.
The remaining eight sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site by the Ambulance Service team. All severely injured firefighters have since been treated and discharged.
