The seven crew members of a fishing canoe, Second Chance, who were reported missing after failing to return from a fishing expedition offshore Axim, have reportedly been found in Benin, according to the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA).
The development follows a search coordinated by the Western Regional Marine Police Command after the canoe and its crew failed to return to shore.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the Western Regional Police Command said the canoe’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the incident at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18.
According to the police, Second Chance departed Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9 for a fishing expedition offshore Axim but had not returned by the time the report was made.
Preliminary investigations indicated that repeated attempts to contact the crew had been unsuccessful.
