The University of Mines and Technology(UMaT) has received its first tranche of 200 laptops under the Government of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), marking a significant step in expanding digital skills training within the institution.
The presentation ceremony, held on Friday, April 10, 2026 at the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations forms part of a nationwide rollout led by the ministry to equip young Ghanaians with coding and digital competencies for the global job market.
UMaT is participating in the first phase of the initiative alongside sister institutions such as the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Coast, among others, all of which are expected to serve as key hubs for training under the programme.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, indicated that insights from the pilot phase of the programme have informed a more structured national rollout designed to deliver practical skills and employment opportunities for beneficiaries.

Under Phase One, the programme will operate in 130 learning centres across all 16 regions, each equipped with customised laptops configured for coding training.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with key agencies including the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Ghana Digital Centres Limited and the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT.
Samuel Nartey George noted that the initiative is not merely about training large numbers, but about equipping young people with practical digital skills that can translate into real job opportunities.
UMaT’s inclusion highlights efforts to extend digital skills to students in specialised fields such as computer science and engineering, cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence, information systems and technology, as well as other engineering and applied sciences disciplines, to equip them for emerging opportunities in software development, artificial intelligence and remote digital work.

Dr Emmanuel Effah and Dr Felix Larbi Aryeh, heads of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and the Cyber Security and Information Systems Department recieved the computers on behalf of the University.
The One Million Coders Programme is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, with institutions like UMaT contributing to the development of a future-ready and globally competitive workforce.
