One person has died and several others sustained injuries following a collision involving a fuel tanker and a tipper truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway late Monday night.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its personnel successfully contained a major fire that erupted after a fuel tanker belonging to GIG Empire collided head-on with a tipper truck between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana, averting what could have become a large-scale explosion.
According to the GNFS, an emergency call was received at approximately 11:49 p.m. on June 8, 2026. A fire crew from the Tema Motorway Fire Station, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I Samuel Darko, was dispatched a minute later and arrived at the scene at 11:54 p.m., where the fuel tanker was already fully engulfed in flames.
Additional support was provided by crews from the Ashaiman Fire Station and the Tema Industrial Area Fire Station, as well as a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly. The coordinated response brought the blaze under control at 12:56 a.m. before it was completely extinguished at 1:44 a.m.
Three injured persons — identified as Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie and Aaron Kyei — were rushed to the Tema General Hospital before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Firefighters later recovered the charred body of a man believed to be the driver of the tipper truck. The remains were handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.
The collision and subsequent fire caused extensive damage to both vehicles. The fuel tanker was completely burnt, including all 26 of its tyres, while both vehicles suffered severe structural damage. An undetermined quantity of fuel was also lost in the fire.
