The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has cut gas supply to Ghana, ghextractives.com is learning.
This follows the inability of government to settle its indebtedness to WAPCo to the tune of US $20 million.
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has attributed the cause of blackout in parts of the country to limited gas supply.
In a statement on Thursday (26 October), GRIDCo apologised to consumers for the inconvenience as result of the development.
“The Ghana Grid Company Ltd, (GRIDCo), the “Operator” of the National Interconnected
Transmission System (NITS) informs the general public that due to limited gas supply to
Tema, there will be a supply gap of 550MW at peak time.”
“This will affect power supply to consumers in some parts of the country. The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, government is said to have reached a tentative agreement with WAPCo to clear the debt.

Meanwhile the West African Gas Pipeline Company limited (WAPCo) says it is committed to delivering on its mandate of facilitating development within the West Africa through the supply of gas to its client.
Speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Monday (18 September) general manager, corporate affairs at WAPCo, Dr Isaac Doku said transportation of gas has recently improved tremendously with the completion of the Takoradi phase of the Takoradi to Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP).
” WAGP has a capacity of 465MMscf/d and even after the reserved capacity is considered, WAGP still has the capacity to transport more gas based on agreements between shippers and off takers.”
“WAPCo’s ability to transport gas from the western part of Ghana following the successful completion of the Takoradi phase of the Takoradi to Tema Interconnection Project (TTIP) and the tie-in to the Ghana Gas transmission system, has further improved the volumes of gas that the WAGP transports,” he added.

The media engagement sought to build the capacity of journalist to understand and appreciate the operations of WAPCo and also foster good relations between the two parties.
