The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly to a distress call early Thursday morning after two children were trapped in a water-filled abandoned manhole at Blue Rose Estate, Budumburam.
The Budumburam Fire Station received the emergency call at 7:40 a.m. and dispatched a rescue team immediately. The crew arrived on the scene at 7:54 a.m., finding 16-year-old Andrews had already been rescued by local residents and transported to St. Gregory Hospital.
The fire service team quickly initiated a recovery operation and retrieved the second victim, 8-year-old Elijah Carbah, who was also rushed to St. Gregory Hospital. Tragically, Elijah was pronounced dead upon arrival.
GNFS officials commended the swift response of the rescue crew and called for increased community awareness regarding abandoned and water-filled manholes, which pose serious hazards, particularly to children.
