The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will soon begin a nationwide meter audit covering all its operational areas as part of efforts to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.
The exercise will involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to verify the integrity of metering systems and ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.
In a public announcement, ECG said the notice served as official notification of the exercise and that it would not issue separate prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications to customers.
The company has therefore urged customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny, restrict or delay authorised ECG personnel access to their premises solely because they have not received an individual notification letter.
ECG cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to grant public utility employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or check utility equipment, subject to the presentation of verifiable identification and compliance with the procedures in the utility’s Customer Charter.
The company said all employees and authorised agents participating in the audit would carry official ECG identification cards.
Customers have been advised to verify the identity of field personnel before granting access by calling ECG’s customer call centre on 0302 611 611 or using the company’s USSD verification service.
