The Ghana Navy has intercepted an illegal fishing operation along the Ada–Keta–Aflao coastal stretch following a targeted fisheries enforcement patrol conducted on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
According to the Navy, a Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) was deployed to the area after intelligence reports indicated widespread Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities within the coastal waters, posing a serious threat to marine sustainability and the blue economy.
During the patrol, naval personnel intercepted a group of fishermen at Ada who were engaged in light fishing, an illegal practice prohibited under Ghana’s fisheries regulations due to its destructive impact on marine ecosystems and fish stocks.
A boarding team conducted a detailed inspection of the canoes and equipment used by the fishermen, leading to the seizure of seven generators, light cables and bulbs, and a 17-plate battery employed in the illicit activity.
The confiscated items have since been transported to Naval Base Tema, where they are being held pending formal disposal instructions from the Fisheries Commission.
The Ghana Navy has called on coastal communities to actively support national security efforts, protect marine biodiversity, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the blue economy by reporting suspicious activities within Ghana’s maritime domain.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime environment through continuous surveillance, strict enforcement of fisheries laws, and sustained strategic operations.
