The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a planned power interruption in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 16, 2026, to enable emergency restoration works on the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line at Ashaiman.
According to GRIDCo, a transmission tower was damaged when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on its tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW).
Power supply to some areas will be interrupted from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to allow GRIDCo engineers and technical teams to replace the damaged tower and restore the integrity of the transmission line.
GRIDCo has apologised to affected customers and urged the public to cooperate during the emergency works.
The company also reminded the public that unauthorised activities within transmission line corridors are prohibited under the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004.
It said unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial activities, lorry parks, shops, garages, welding and other activities that interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of transmission infrastructure are prohibited within protected corridors.
GRIDCo further said persons and businesses encroaching on transmission line Rights-of-Way have been directed to cease unauthorised activities and vacate affected corridors within one month, after which enforcement action will be taken with relevant authorities and security agencies.
