The Association of Women in Mining in Africa (AWIMA) has announced plans to open nominations for the 2nd edition of the AWIMA Leadership Awards by the end of February.
The prestigious event aims to recognize and honour outstanding women leaders in the mining industry throughout Africa.
Speaking to ghextractives.com on the sidelines of this year’s Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, President of AWIMA, Zenzi Natasha Awases said the prize category will be increased this year.
‘’The AWIMA Leadership Awards was launched in Ghana in 2024 with the idea of acknowledging women leaders in the mining industry.’’
‘’Last year we introduced prize categories, this year we are going to go a little bigger. It was a pilot, last year we gave out 22 awards, ‘’ she said.

The maiden edition of the AWIMA Leadership Awards was held last year in Accra, Ghana.
The African Mineral Development Centre last year supported the initiative.
The support emphasizes AMDC’S dedication and commitment to fostering sustainable development principles on environmentally and socially responsible mining across the continent.
About AWIMA
The Association of Women in Mining in Africa (AWIMA) was founded on August 19, 2015, in Nairobi, Kenya, during the African Women Business Linkages Forum organized by the African Union Commission, with Melody Kweba serving as the Founding President.
AWIMA unites 36 National Mining Organisations and Associations across five regions in Africa, focusing on training, capacity building, sustainable mining practices, and advocacy to empower women in the extractives sector and enhance their economic participation.
AWIMA’s administrative office is currently based in Accra, Ghana.
