The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video in which an American woman, identified as Arianna Naomi Mackey, claimed she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by men she alleged were police officers on snap-check duty.
According to a police statement issued on December 9, preliminary inquiries show that the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra where Ms. Mackey and two companions lodged.
Investigators have confirmed that the group checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, and airport records indicate Ms. Mackey left Ghana the same day.
Police say they contacted Ms. Mackey to assist with the investigation. She reportedly informed investigators that she could not identify the alleged officers, nor the number plate of the vehicle involved. She also declined to provide contact details of the friend she claimed was with her during the incident, stating that the friend did not want to be involved.
The statement added that Ms. Mackey has deleted the video from her social media page. Attempts by investigators to reach her via WhatsApp calls and messages were unsuccessful, as she later blocked the CID team.
The Police Service says efforts are ongoing to secure her cooperation through diplomatic channels.
